Stress Corrosion Cracking. How to Avoid It?

.wp-image-1064{display:none;}

What is meant by Stress Corrosion Cracking? This is a phenomenon of degradation of a material due to the combined action of corrosion and applying a constant load.

What does this mean?

The SCC often leads to sudden breaking of metallic materials normally considered ductile that undergo stress in corrosive environment. This especially at high temperatures. The fracture propagates quickly for these reasons.

How to avoid it?

How can I prevent this?

  • delete or restrict mechanically or chemically
  • using stainless steels that are unresponsive or almost to the phenomenon

              – partial ferritic structure (austenitic-ferritic or duplex)
              – total ferritic structure

What are the most sensitive materials?

Some materials are particularly sensitive to the phenomenon of stress corrosion cracking in the presence of other elements. Here we see what:

  • austenitic stainless steels and aluminium alloys: in the presence of chlorine
  • ductile steels: in presence of alkali and nitrates and carbonates and bicarbonates
  • copper alloys: in ammoniacal solutions.

In fact, using stainless steel for the manufacture of containers of water if the latter contains chlorine must be limited to temperatures below 50° C. Metals in aqueous environments (especially containing chlorine) will present a crack propagation in subcritical area.
