Grinding wheels are important components of the manufacturing and industrial firms. They are cutting tools used for various abrasive cuts. There is a wide array of grinding wheels for a wide variety of grinding works in the metal industry. If you choose the wrong product, it will cost you a lot of time and money. To select the best grinding wheel for your business, you need to first understand the types of wheels that are in the market. Here is a description of the different types of grinding wheels;

  • Cylinder wheel

There is no center mount present, and it is handy in vertical or horizontal spindle grinder. It produces flat surfaces, since the only part that is effective on the wheel is the end face.

  • Straight wheel

It is the most common and produces concave surfaces. It is useful in bench or pedestal grinding operations. The form, diameter and width of the wheel depends on the class of work and machine power.

  • Straight cup

This has an additional radial grinding surface, making it a better option for cutter and tool grinders

  • Tapered wheel

This is very useful for grinding thread, gear teeth and other similar activities. It is stronger than the straight wheel and is able to deal with more lateral load, as it is a straight wheel tapered out toward the center.

  • Mounted point

As it is small, it is bonded to a mandrel. The two mounted point’s types are resin and diamond. In de-burring application, the resin-mounted point is used, and the diamond-mounted point is used for hard materials profiling.

  • Diamond wheel

On the periphery, industrial diamonds are bonded, making it a perfect tool for grinding substances that are extremely tough, such as carbide cutting tips, gemstones and concrete.

As you choose the wheel that suits your needs, consider the material that has been ground, as it will help you choose the kind of abrasive that you will require on the wheel.

Remember that the wheels must be used with the right amount of protection and precaution, and they should be stored properly to protect them from gouging and banging. The room they are stored in should not be subjected to extreme temperature variations, as this can damage the bond in some of the wheels.
